Queen Elizabeth II Dies at 96 After Health Complications

Rabat - Queen Elizabeth II died on September 8th at the age of 96 after her health deteriorated in recent weeks.

The Buckingham Palace announced the news today, saying "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.

The announcement followed an earlier statement from Buckingham Palace, which quoted the queen’s doctors’ concerns about her health.

“The whole country will be deeply concerned by the news from Buckingham Palace this lunchtime,” British Prime Minister Liz Truss said in a tweet.

Once the news broke out about the deterioration of the queen’s health, members of the royal family gathered at Balmoral palace in Scotland amid concerns.

The queen ruled longer than any other monarch in the UK’s history.

Born in Mayfair in 1926, the queen was the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York, who would later become King George VI and Queen Elizabeth I.

The queen (then princess) received her education at the palace.

The queen became the first in line to the throne when her father succeeded his brother Edward VIII who suddenly abdicated the throne in 1936. She studied constitutional history and law to prepare for her future role.

The queen was taught in civil affairs and religion by her father, as well as being tutored by Henry Marten, the Vice Provost of the elite British university Eton.

The local French and Belgian governesses’ also offered the then princess French classes.

She also studied art and music and became a “strong swimmer.”

When her father, King George VI died following a prolonged illness, Elizabeth II immediately acceded to the throne in 1952.

Elizabeth II leaves behind four children, including Charles, Prince of Wales, Anne, Princess Royal, Prince Andrew, Duke of York, and Prince Edward,  Earl of Wessex.

The queen is also a grandmother to eight grandchildren, as well as 11 great-grandchildren.
